New Life Program
While in our New Life Recovery Program, men and women will learn new methods to face the daily challenges they encounter.
The first 30-days allows an applicant to stabilize in sobriety and get into the routine of the New LifeProgram. There are detailed interviews with the prospective program members to determine if he or she truly wants help and if the Rescue Mission can help. If the Rescue Mission does not have the psychiatric or medical experience necessary to assist the individual we partner with other agencies in a cooperative treatment plan. If the person has needs beyond our ability or if the potential program member does not think the fit is right, we will assist the applicant with referrals to other agencies.
Accepted students participate in six months of education, counseling, life skills, and work-therapy. It is during this phase that students are matched with a staff counselor and work through our Bible-based recovery and relapse prevention curriculum. Life Skills and work-therapy are proven ways for those in recovery to build confidence and learn critical life skills as they prepare to return to the work world
The students attend two to three classes per day that include a Bible study and an addiction recovery group class, both taught by Rescue Mission staff. The third class is tailored to the current needs of the men and women in the program. During this time, they also create new healthy relationships by connecting with their community mentor and the local church they have chosen to attend. It is also during this phase that the Mission helps the student resolve outstanding legal issues they may have.
Once a student has completed the educational curriculum, he or she meets with our job placement coordinator to create a resume, work on interview skills, and actively seeks job openings in order to obtain full-time employment. We provide bus passes and continue to provide the clothing a person needs to succeed in the workplace.
Once a job is obtained, students learn how to apply their recovery skills to real-life situations they face in the workplace. While out in the “real world” they continue to benefit from the trusted and protected environment that the New Life Program provides. Students learn to budget and save so they can graduate and move into permanent housing. They also build a support team of at least four individuals who they can lean on after graduation. This team is critical to ensuring long-term success.
Healthy relationships continue through the graduate’s church and here at the Rescue Mission. It’s important for graduates to know they are not alone as they continue to work their recovery. There are options for students to continue to meet with their staff counselor and community mentor after graduation. Many of our graduates stay in touch for years and it is wonderful to see them as they continue to succeed – many even into the ownership of their own home.
Students also have the option to enter one of our transitional homes, which are sober-living homes with discounted rent. The Freedom House (for men) and the Hope House (for women) are staffed with a house manager who can mentor and encourage. These homes afford graduates more time to practice and establish healthy habits and relationships in a safe and supportive environment.
